Description

Espoma Organic Traditions Compost Bio-Excelerator offers the complete solution to generating rich, fertile humus - Nature's best soil conditioner. Bio-Excelertor contains the most effective microorganisms coupled with the proper energy sources and pH balancers to assure you composting success. No other composting aid contains more powerful ingredients than Espoma and no other composting aid offers the combination of Bio-Organics and pH balancers to help guarantee the speedy conversion to humus. For over 70 years the Espoma Company has been synonymous with successful gardening - naturally. When only the finest, highest quality products will do, choose Espoma.

Directions:
Sprinkle enough Bio-Excelerator to completely cover your compost pile (approximately 1 cup per 16 square feet of compost). Each time you add another layer of organic material, sprinkle Bio-Excelerator completely over your last layer. If you completely moisten (not soak) the added layer after your application of Bio-Excelerator and turn the pile regularly (preferably once a week), you can reduce the time required for humus production to 2 to 3 months minimum.

Ingredients:
Espoma Compost Bio-Excelerator contains billions of microbes especially cultured for composting. In addition to containing moderate and high heat active microbes, special varieties are included that can speed the decomposition of difficult to compost organic matter. All are combined with special proprietary energy sources containing kelp and dried blood to ensure rapid decomposition. Bio-Excelerator also contains special natural organic calcium compounds to neutralize the organic acids produced during composting.

Storage:
To ensure maximum activity of this product, keep it dry and store at moderate temperatures.

Composting Suggestions and Hints:
The organic compost that you produce can and should be used everywhere in your garden: flower beds, shrubs, vegetable gardens, potted and/or container plants and lawns. It is best used when it can be incorporated into the soil.

Composting is easy. Any organic material can be composted. This includes meat scraps, oils, fats, kitchen scraps, yard waste - branches, leaves, grass, etc. There are some additional factors to consider however. Meat scraps, fats, etc. take longer and can attract animal pests. This is a concern particularly for Level I composting (see below). Branches can take years to decompose unless you shred them.

The factors which control composting are: quality and physical condition of the organic material, air, sufficient microorganisms, temperature, moisture, energy sources, and pH. Bio-Excelerator solves the microorganisms, energy sources, and pH requirements. If you are experiencing problems they can generally be solved by adding Bio-Excelerator and aerating (turning the compost), moistening (not drowning) the pile, or shredding the organic material. Also your compost pile needs to be of sufficient size to ensure successful results.

Problem - foul odors. This can occur from the type of organic material being used and/or because your compost pile is undergoing anaerobic conditions (not enough air). Solution - turn pile more frequently and be careful to not over water.

Composting Directions:
Level I - 1 Year or more:
Level I composting takes the least effort but is slow. Select a partially shaded site on level well-drained ground where you wish to build your compost pile. A minimum area of four feet by four feet is suggested. The first layer of your pile should be composed of small branches, twigs, wood chips, etc. This will help increase air penetration and porosity. Sprinkle enough Bio-Excelerator to completely cover this area (approximately one cup per 16 sq. feet). Now add a six inch layer of organic material. Before adding the next layer of organic material sprinkle Bio-Excelerator completely over your last layer. After several layers or organic material have been added it is helpful to add another layer of small branches, twigs, wood chips, etc. to help ensure good porosity throughout your pile. Continue to repeat this process until your pile is at least four feet high. Always remember to apply Bio-Excelerator before adding another layer of organic material. You should expect quality humus in about a year or more.

Level II Composting - 2 to 3 months:
Level II composting follows the same procedure as Level I except that there are two additional requirements. After each application of Espoma Compost Bio-Excelerator you should completely moisten (not soak) the area. Next a minimum of at least twice a month, but preferably once a week, the pile should be turned. Since you will turning the pile regularly, it is not necessary to have the intermittent layers of small branches, twigs, wood chips, etc. unless you desire to do so. Level II composting reduces the time required for humus product to two to three months minimum.

Level III Composting - 2 to 3 weeks:
Level III composting requires that the organic material be shredded whenever possible. Follow directions for building your compost pile from Level II above. Every time organic material is added it should be sprinkled completely with Bio-Excelerator and moistened. Daily inspect your compost pile to make sure that is remains moist and turn the pile completely. Surface area, aerobic conditions, and moisture are all optimized with this system. Under these optimum conditions humus can be generated in two to three weeks minimum.

Comments about Espoma Organic Traditions Compost Bio-Excelerator:

This is a follow-up review after using Espoma for one compost mix in the Wizard, Jr. Espoma works absolutely great on certain things only: soft produce like bananas, apples, pears, melons, leafy greens, all root veggies like carrots, beets, onions, potatoes, citrus peels, coffee grounds, tea leaves, flower petals (no stems), and chicken droppings.

I avoided putting anything of the corn plant into the compost because it just doesn't break down (not the stalk, not the cob, not the kernels, silk, etc.) Two years in a compost pile never broke these items apart - they shriveled, got hard and wet, but never broke down.

Espoma did not help break down the following one bit: avocado skins (came out super hard and unbroken), tomatillo outer paper skins (came out with lacey veins, bright green and never turned dark), autumn leaves (turned black but the veins in the leaves got hard and the leaves themselves stayed solid - never decomposed in the bin), straw (came out the same way it went in - tough, unbroken, still yellow), egg shells (should've crushed these fine before adding to compost because the whole shells never broke down). All these came out of the compost bin the way they went in and NEVER broke down and sifting was useless because I had a black gooey mess sticking to the big chunks that didn't break down like the straw and leaves.

Now that I know what Espoma doesn't break down, I won't throw these into the next compost mix. Espoma is truly nice when used on select plants and foods. Harder yard waste is useless to waste nice Espoma on it. Every gardener is very different. This is just comments on my particular experience using Espoma. Extremely nice product but now I will only use it on food plant compost.

Comments about Espoma Organic Traditions Compost Bio-Excelerator:

The Espoma product is described as 4 lbs but I received instead 3.5 lbs printed on the bag. Anyway, I almost gave this 4 stars instead of 5 because of the website's wrong weight description when I ordered. Otherwise, the product is good in that it is almost odorless, has helped to instantly heat up the contents of our Wizard Jr. compost bin and I have enough left over to start a second bin next week. Our local hardware and garden stores had no compost starters in stock and some didn't even know what we asked for - they wanted to sell us finished bags of compost instead because they didn't know about compost starters or about Espoma. The stores didn't even carry decent compost bins or compost crocks. We researched for 6 months to find a cute rooster kitchen compost crock elsewhere and got Bokashi composter from Hayneedle for the crock. We researched for about 8 months to find the no-assembly, easy-to-use Wizard Jr. compost bin and Espoma compost starter from Hayneedle. Hayneedle has a variety of compost pails and filters, bins, Bokashi kitchen compost starter and starter storage containers. Hayneedle offered what we needed and on their compost bins webpage are very helpful with their products, composting, and gardening questions. This is our one-stop gardening/composting shop now.
