Compost Bin, Composting Tool (Push/Pull Tool), Compost Starter
Additional features
The Exaco 123 Gallon Earthmaker Compost Bin is eco-friendly, natural, organic, and easy. Earthmaker’s unique aerobic process supports new waste material on shelves above the ground. Radiant heat absorbed by the black plastic top, and heat naturally generated by the decomposition process, draws air up through the ventilation holes under the compost material. Aeration is increased when compost material loosens as it spills from shelf to shelf. Oxygen is needed for microbes to break down organic waste efficiently – so aerobic composting is faster!
Easy to Use
Earthmaker’s patented three-stage process uses traditional three-bin composting but stacked vertically so gravity does the hard work. Earthmaker’s continuous cycle process keeps new material away from older material. Food and garden waste can be added at any time. Mature mulch or compost can be removed when convenient. (Attempting to aerate material in a single bin unit means mixing new waste with old, which slows down the process.) The Earthmaker's included push-pull-tool makes it easy to mix and move material through the process without straining your back with heavy lifting and turning.
Faster Process
Research at Garden Organic, an independent research institute in the UK, found that Earthmaker will make twice as much compost as traditional bins over the same period. As noted above, when composting is aerobic it is more efficient as heat from the sun absorbed into the top chamber accelerates the process.
How the Earthmaker Works
Top chamber – mixing
Composting begins with microbial action. Fungi and bacteria make heat (that’s why grass cuttings get hot) and also like heat. Radiant energy from the sun (even when it’s cloudy) is helpful, especially in winter.
Middle chamber – digesting
'Biological mulching' occurs during the next phase. The internal climate is cooler and composting continues with invertebrates assisting micro-organisms to further break down larger particles of your valuable food and garden waste. Earthworms may hatch from eggs in the grass cuttings and leaves, etc.
Lower chamber – maturing and storing
As the material reaches the ground, excess water drains away and the process begins converting the mulch into compost. If you leave it long enough it will become sweet smelling and ‘friable’, but it can be added to your garden at any stage between mulch and compost.

I use my composter for my vegetable & flower gardens. The ability to continually add to this composter is it's best feature, because of it's design you always have compost in 3 different stages of breakdown. I put grass clippings, leaves, coffee grounds, the guinea pig cage (all organic products), fruit, egg shells and such in it. I haven't had any rodent problems at all and because I watch what I put in it, it doesn't smell bad. In fact, it smells like rich earth! A fellow gardner likes my composter so much, she sold her barrel and bought this one. The only bad thing I can say is it's big, black and sticks out like a sore thumb. I have mine hidden so it's no problem for me.

Not Rodent Proof
Rodents access the bin from the bottom AND eat through the plastic lid. We cannot use this in our urban environment.

Comments about Exaco 123 Gallon Earthmaker Compost Bin:
After a lot of research, I elected to go with this three chamber design. It went together with ease in five minutes. I was surprised that it was so sturdy once assembled. It was placed on nine, leveled, twelve inch square concrete pavers. I loaded it up with equil amounts of green and brown materials, three days ago. Things are heating up well in there. I'm looking forward to many years of use. The common con in the reviews has been the lid. This has not been an issue for me. My lid turns rather that sliding, it may have been redesigned. Mine works fine and stays in place.

Comments about Exaco 123 Gallon Earthmaker Compost Bin:
Love the design of this bin. I placed right in a spot where it blends in nicely with my landscaping. I also did as other reviewers recommended and placed on bricks/stones so that I won't have small critters burrowing into the bin. I do wish the lid was a tad more "attached" or of heavier construction perhaps, since it simply comes off completely rather than merely opening. The raker tool also falls off all the time between my visits to the bin, due to the hook being very small I think. Easy design flaws that can and should be fixed. Otherwise, love it so far! I'm only into the second level of the cycle, so we'll see the final product soon.
Comments about Exaco 123 Gallon Earthmaker Compost Bin:
This is a good unit if you want to compost continually, which is why I bought it. Assembles easily and easy to use. My big complaint is that mine arrived with the top tab of one of the sides broken off during shipping, so it doesn't stay together properly at the top. Once you assemble it, seems like disassembling it with the locking tabs risks further damage, so I am just using it with a bungee chord wrapped around the top. Not what I expected from a [$] unit. I would recommend this if I had confidence that they would arrive undamaged.
