If you truly want to go green, why not consider a composter made of wood? The Exaco 90 Gallon ECO Wooden Compost Bin is made of FSC-certified Canadian Spruce wood that has gone through the Torrefaction process. This is a natural preservation technique that produces a longer-lasting material that is termite-resistant and which deteriorates more slowly than plastic.

Not only is wood better for the environment, it's also better for you landscape. This composter's simple, neat design will easily blend into your yard or garden, and the natural wood color and finish is easy on the eye. Since the lid is also made of heavy wood, there is no danger of it flying off in a sudden gust of wind and rolling around your yard as a flimsier lid might do.

This composter's large-capacity bin couldn't be simpler to use. Just open the lid, toss in your kitchen scraps and garden waste, and then walk away. It will do its job without any more help from you. With the Exaco ECO 12 Cubic Feet Compost Bin, being green is easy!

What Is Torrefaction?
Torrefaction is a drying process in which the wood is subjected to a temperature of 200-300 degrees centigrade at near atmospheric pressure. At this temperature, the biomass partially decomposes, altering the chemical nature of the wood. This alteration consists of a loss of oxygen and hydrogen, leaving behind a larger concentration of carbon. The result of this process is a wood product that has a very low moisture uptake, and consequently a low rate of biological degradation. Torrefaction of wood is a natural preservation process, which is achieved without the application of chemicals.

Comments about Exaco 90 Gallon ECO Wooden Compost Bin:

We are going to modify ours with a removal door near the bottom. As it is, we have to take the compost out from the top to sift it. I agree that a hinged lid would be nice but the removable lid doesn't bother me.

Comments about Exaco 90 Gallon ECO Wooden Compost Bin:

I'm not using the lid but it would bother me if I were since it requires two hands to place it on and off. It doesn't seem too sturdy. It's fine now but it seems like it could break easily.

I love the smell of the wood.

I bought mine 2 months ago and I've already had to replace one side due to breakage. The manufacturer replaced it quickly.

Comments about Exaco 90 Gallon ECO Wooden Compost Bin:

This is a very attractive compost bin and I'm happy to use natural materials, rather than plastic. It was also very easy to assemble. That's the good side. On the other hand, I'm not wild about the construction. The lid is in two pieces, which simply seat on top of the bin. It is designed so that the two halves would seat within the opening of the bin, with an overlapping portion that makes the rain go over the bin. One of our halves does not seat properly. Also, the other day when I removed both lids to place leaves in the bin, I dropped them gently on the grass, and one of the boards split. That's kind of ridiculous since this is supposed to be able to withstand all sorts of weather conditions. Geez, the wind could whip it much harder than that. So, all in all, I give it just an average rating.

Comments about Exaco 90 Gallon ECO Wooden Compost Bin:

Great recycling bin, looks good, well made and I really think I will have this for many many years. I'd heard the rolling chamber ones were just gimmick and they look messy. This feels like something a real gardener would use.
