Description

Featuring an innovative drum-and-base design, the Envirocycle 52 Gallon Compost Tumbler eliminates the back ache you often get from churning compost materials and makes it easy to transport compost to your garden. The compost drum and base are both made of durable, weather-resistant recycled plastic. The compost drum sits on top of eight rollers with metal rods that are positioned in depressions on top of the base. Easy-grip indentations make it very easy for you to rotate the drum and stir your compost materials without getting your hands dirty!

How to make solid compost with the Envirocycle Composter:
To add biodegradable materials to the compost bin, simply unlatch the lockable flip-up door and add a 50/50 balance of brown dry materials and green wet materials. (Brown materials include leaves, dry grass, shredded newspaper, and other natural products. Green materials include fruit and vegetable peels, egg shells, coffee grinds, and plant trimmings.) Securely close the door and lock the latches. Rotate the drum three times a week to ensure perfect mix and proper air circulation. When your compost has matured, you can simply remove the barrel from the base, place it on the ground, and roll it to any location in your yard. Unlatch the door or temporarily remove it completely to spread the solid compost on your trees, garden, and lawn.

How to make liquid fertilizer with the Envirocycle Composter:
In addition to solid compost, this efficient compost bin also produces liquid compost "tea." Small openings in the drum allow this rich organic liquid to drain into the base, which can hold up to 5 gallons of liquid fertilizer. When you're ready to tap the liquid, you can unscrew the central cap to drain it directly into the ground or unscrew the front cap and attach a garden hose or empty the base directly into a watering can. It's best to dilute the liquid with 10 parts water to create an effective fertilizer for your indoor or outdoor plants.

Designed for year-round use.
The Envirocycle Composter can be used all year round. During the winter months, move the composter into the garage, onto your balcony, or close to your home's door for easy access. Continue to add waste but don't turn the unit. Freezing breaks down fibers in organic material and will accelerate decomposition in spring. During the warmer months of the year, a typical cycle for finished solid and liquid fertilizer takes four to six weeks.

At first there were LOTS of fly larva - so before they turned into flies, I looked it up on the internet and saw the reason was that I didn't have enough "brown" (newspaper, shredded paper, brown leaves, etc) Should be 50/50. Once I did that, the larva never did hatch and "disappeared."
I found a great trick. When I buy wine, they put them into long thin paper bags, so now I just put my kitchen scraps in those bags and dump the whole bag into the bin.
Brown is the carbon energy the compost microbes need to thrive. Without it, "green" kitchen scraps will become smelly and slimy. This is because greens will decompose too quickly through the bacteria already in the materials, rapidly fermenting nitrogen into the rotten egg smell of ammonia.
You want enough brown materials for the good bacteria and microbes to have enough energy to multiply and slow down the release of nitrogen.

I was very happy with this composter for 5 years until the latch hole broke and I can no longer tumble the composter. I can't replace the "hole" because it is part of the composter and now I have to replace the unit because I can't tumble it. A new latch can't be installed on top of the old one because you wouldn't be able to tumble the composter. A reinforced latch hole would have been nice so I wouldn't have to throw this composter out and buy a new one. I would not purchase this composter again.

Comments about Envirocycle 52 Gallon Compost Tumbler:

We bought two units so that we can let the compost cook in one while we fill up the other. We haven't had them long enough to produce compost, but so far they seem to be working well. They are an ideal size, unobtrusive and easy to reposition if we need to. As other reviewers have noted, the door hinge and latch do appear somewhat flimsy, but the warranty is excellent.

                  Customer Q & A

                  Q1: Is this item rodent-proof?

A: If you keep a good 50/50 balance between wet and dry material added to the composter, the Envirocycle should not produce any odors at all and thus should not attract rodents. Make sure you close the door properly between each usage. Another option is to keep the composter in an enclosed place, like a garage.

Q2: Do I have to rotate to the opening on the top to dump it out?

A: The easiest way to dump the compost out is to take it off the base, and roll it on the ground with the door open. The compost should come out with that method and a little shaking. It all depends on the material that you are using in the compost bin.

Q3: How sturdy is the door? Will it be easy to turn when it is almost full and needs to be rotated?

A: Yes, the door is sturdy, and you should have no issues rotating it when full.

Q4: How large is the opening for adding or removing?

                  A: The opening is 13 x 9 inches.
