Description

As written about in The New York Times, the NatureMill Plus XE Edition Recycled Plastic Kitchen Composter is about as green as it gets. The thing itself is made from recycled plastic and is super fast - it processes waste every four hours. Up to 120 lbs. of waste per month can be made into rich, organic fertilizer. A lot of rubbish? You bet it is.

Fully automatic and odor free, this indoor composter turns food scraps into a nutrient-rich mix for your plants in just two weeks. The unit is completely sealed, and its continuous air flow and a powerful filter remove odors. Add everything from vegetables to coffee grounds, meat to fish, every day if you like, as waste items are processed continuously, mixing every four hours until they're completely ground down into small particles. You can add up to 120 lbs. of waste a month. When your compost is ready, approximately every two weeks, a red light indicator will notify you. You'll find that more than 70 percent of the initial waste has disappeared, literally, as compost cultures convert it into water vapor. What's left is a very concentrated compost fertilizer. You can use it immediately, or leave it in a heap outdoors until you are ready to work in your garden. It includes a starter kit with pellets, too.

How the NatureMill Plus XE Kitchen Composter works
Deposit food waste items any time, on any day. You can add up to 120 lbs. per month. For best results, it's recommended that you cut items into small pieces. Items remain in the upper chamber with "hot composting" conditions of mixing, air flow, heat, and moisture. The energy released destroys odors, pathogens, and seed germination. The compost is later transferred through a trap door to the lower cure tray chamber where it continues to compost while you add fresh waste items to the upper chamber.

No odors, worms or bugs
Cultures consume waste quickly, without odors. The cultures produce a mild aroma similar to sourdough, mushrooms, or damp straw. Balance the chemistry by adding a small amount of sawdust to increase "brown" content, and baking soda to reduce acidity. A fan draws air into the machine continuously, providing oxygen to the cultures. A powerful carbon filter removes any lingering odors. Replace the filter ever 4 to 5 years.

Specifications:

  • Temperatures: Use in any external location 0 – 120F or internal up to 140F
  • Rate of compost production: 1 batch every 2 weeks (depending on actual usage).
Indicator light signals when to remove compost.
  • Finished product: High nitrogen compost – a soil amendment for lawns, gardens
trees, or potted plants. Compost is ready to use.
  • Compaction: 70% or more, volume and weight reduction, due to bio-degrading
    (composting) and mechanical breakdown.
  • Construction: External housing is recycled and recyclable energy-efficient
polypropylene (stamped with 5-inch triangle recycling symbol). Food-grade stainless
steel and aluminum internal components. Will last years when used properly.
  • Cost savings: Reduce trash enough to qualify for discounted trash collection rate
(contact your trash company for details). Save money on fertilizer. Water less due to
    high moisture retention of compost.
  • Power consumption: 5 kwh/month – as much as a typical night light. This costs
about 50 cents a month. Uses far less energy than hauling the same amount of waste
in a diesel garbage truck. All NatureMill composters meet or surpass efficiency
Standards of Energy Star (US Environmental Protection Agency), and California
    Energy Efficiency Level IV.
  • Cleaning and maintenance: Wipe hopper and exterior with a moist towel. Rinse
the cure tray and drip tray when you empty them. Do not disturb the compost
cultures in the reactor chamber. Do not use soaps or chemicals. Replace the filter every 5-7 years.

About Nature Mill
From activists to engineers, the people of Nature Mill have aimed to make a difference. They recycle paper, bottles and cans, read newspapers online and favor environmentally friendly products and packaging. Some even walk or bike to work. Despite their commitment to reduce, reuse, recycle, they still found themselves producing shameful amounts of trash. This was when they ventured head first into backyard composting, first with a humble kitchen crock. They soon discovered, after forgetting to clean their crock, that the waste was warm. Microorganisms were hard at work. The compost process had begun. Just a little more oxygen, some mechanical mixing, and a strong air filter would accelerate the process and eliminate the odors and bugs. Dozens of patents and prototypes later, the NatureMill was born.

We've had this in our home for a few weeks now and it does exactly what it says it does. We've been putting everything in it from food scraps, meats, dead plants, wilted flowers, and even an entire moldy frosted cake. Pretty much anything you put in it is unrecognizable the next day. If you manage the correct mix ratio of green/brown/baking soda, then smell is not a problem. The compost does have a noticable earthy aroma however (like wet coffee grounds, day-old grass clippings, potting soil, etc). Its not offensive, but it is noticable. So, if you don't like that then keep the unit outside or in the garage.

The air-pump that aerates the compost inside makes a constant vibrating hum sound similar to that of a fish-tank air pump. Not bad, but not quiet either. So expect that.

The smaller the pieces you put in, the faster they compost-especially thick/tough items. Its remarkable how fast stuff breaks down inside this unit. Also, I found its better to gradually add 'stuff' in rather than pile lots of stuff in at once. If you add a lot of stuff at once, then the unit has difficulty stirring it all in with the existing compost and it will take an extra day or two to get it all broken down.

Overall, very very pleased with this composter. Its really fun and exciting to watch it do its thing. We have an endless supply of compost for the garden and it keeps our regular garbage from smelling in the hot summer.

I live in a small condo, and my space is limited. I need an extension cord for this unit.
Also, it's very hard for me to get used to the constant hum and the power chain noise which occurs every 4 hours. I do not believe that you had advertised that I would experience such high noise levels.
I bought the product because I'm concerned about the environment, and that is my Pro.

Comments about Nature Mill NatureMill Plus XE Edition Recycled Plastic Kitchen Composter:

I am happy with this purchase. I have tried several other types of composting over the years and the tumblers are impossible to turn once they fill up. This one has a motor. It is automatic. Brilliant. Fast. I like it so far and would highly recommend it. I use it for all of my kitchen scraps and it is a great way to digest them into dirt and not have to throw them into the trash. You can hear it turn on the motor but it is quieter than our refrigerators so not to annoying. One thing I do not like about is is that it is limited in size and I still need a separate compost pile outside for grass clippings and leaves.

Comments about Nature Mill NatureMill Plus XE Edition Recycled Plastic Kitchen Composter:

I just got this about 4 days ago. Set up is a breeze, and they include baking soda and sawdust pellets -- everything you need to get started other than kitchen scraps. I cleaned the frig out and put two good sized bags of wilting greens, about 3 - 4 cups coffee grounds (I'd been saving those), some eggshells, and other miscellaneous scraps. Checked it the next day and it was already looking compost-ish. It does hum constantly, but I would put the noise at about the same level as a fan running on high. I keep mine in the garage, but only due to space -- it is not odor free, but the odor is not icky. Kind of yeasty/woodsy. One thing I'm excited about is you can compost pet feces and biodegradable cat litter, just don't use the compost that results on edible plants. I'll add to this review in a bit after I've used it for a longer time; I'm only giving it four stars until then, but I suspect it will end up five stars for me.

Comments about Nature Mill NatureMill Plus XE Edition Recycled Plastic Kitchen Composter:

I bought a compost tumbler last year and have not been satisfied with that item. Since then, I have had my eye on the NatureMill Plus XE Edition and I am SO happy I took the chance and ordered it! It says to limit citris products but I am a heavy juicer and had an entire compost pail full of mostly rinds and pulp with some coffee grounds. I completely filled the composter with this mix and added the sawdust pellets at 6PM. The next morning when I checked it, I was SHOCKED to see that it was already broke down except for a few large rinds! I just started Square foot gardening this year so am a complete novice in this type of thing but I have no doubt that this will help ensure a good harvest from all my fruit and vegetables!

            Customer Q & A
            1 - 5 of 8
                1   2

Q1: How noisy is the composter? If it is under the sink, can you hear it? You can hear the mixing which occurs every 4 hours for 7 minutes. You can always put it in Energy Save mode at night or during a dinner party if you want to adjust the mixing schedule to once every 24 hrs and then return it to normal mode.

A: You can hear the mixing which occurs every 4 hours for 7 minutes. You can always put in energy mode at night or during a dinner party and if you want to adjust the mixing schedule to every 24 hrs and then return it to normal mode.

Q2: What is the difference between the nature mill pro edition vs. the plus edition composter?

A: The Plus XE is our standard model while the PRO XE is our top of the line model with additional features such as the Heavy Duty mode increasing capacity by 25%, a lifetime filter vs a 5-7 yr filter, a 3 yr vs 1 yr warranty, and a variety of designer colors. The PRO XE also has a footpedal for hands free operation.

Q3: Is this unit battery operated or is it an AC unit?

A: AC unit. It only uses about as much electricity as a night light on normal mode, approximately $0.50 a month

Q4: Will the kitchen composter compost grass and/or leafs?

A: Yes, it will compost grass and leafs.

Q5: What is meant by not composting citrus? Lemons only, oranges only, grapefruit only or all three??

A: You can put it in but not a lot all at one time because it is very acidic.
