Description

Nature Mill is helping folks make compost right in their kitchens. Join the green scene! These composters even made headlines in the New York Times!

Ideal for large families, small restaurants and offices, the top-of-the-line NatureMill PRO XE Edition Recycled Plastic Kitchen Composter has a variety of wonderful features that make it your best choice. It's made of 100% recycled and recyclable polypropylene and features stainless steel internal components for continuous, heavy-duty use. It features a heavy-duty mode to increase mixing and air flow. A foot pedal offers clean, hands-free operation, and a security locking feature will come in handy in public areas such as offices or restaurants (padlock not included). The vacation mode means the composter will automatically activate after a period of inactivity to conserve energy, and optimize heat and mixing for curing. This composter is available in several designer colors, and includes start kit with pellets.

The unit is completely sealed and for continuous air flow, a powerful lifetime filter removes odors. Add everything from vegetables to coffee grounds, meat to fish every day, if you like as waste items are processed continuously, mixing every four hours until they're completely ground down into small particles. You can add up to 120 lbs. of waste a month. When your compost is ready, approximately every two weeks, a red light indicator will notify you. You'll find that more than 70 percent of the initial waste has disappeared, literally, as compost cultures convert it into water vapor. What's left is a very concentrated compost fertilizer. You can use it immediately, or leave it in a heap outdoors until you are ready to work in your garden.

How it works
Deposit food waste items any time, on any day. You can add up to 120 lbs. per month. For best results, it's recommended that you cut items into small pieces. Items remain in the upper chamber with "hot composting" conditions of mixing, air flow, heat, and moisture. The energy released destroys odors, pathogens, and seed germination. The compost is later transferred through a trap door to the lower cure tray chamber where it continues to compost while you add fresh waste items to the upper chamber.

No odors, worms or bugs
Cultures consume waste quickly, without odors. The cultures produce a mild aroma similar to sourdough, mushrooms, or damp straw. Balance the chemistry by adding a small amount of sawdust to increase "brown" content, and baking soda to reduce acidity. A fan draws air into the machine continuously, providing oxygen to the cultures. A powerful carbon filter removes any lingering odors. The lifetime filter never needs replacing.

About Nature Mill
From activists to engineers, the people of Nature Mill have aimed to make a difference. They recycle paper, bottles and cans, read newspapers online and favor environmentally friendly products and packaging. Some even walk or bike to work. Despite their commitment to reduce, reuse, recycle, they still found themselves producing shameful amounts of trash. This was when they ventured head first into backyard composting, first with a humble kitchen crock. They soon discovered, after forgetting to clean their crock, that the waste was warm. Microorganisms were hard at work. The compost process had begun. Just a little more oxygen, some mechanical mixing, and a strong air filter would accelerate the process and eliminate the odors and bugs. Dozens of patents and prototypes later, the NatureMill was born.

Comments about Nature Mill NatureMill PRO XE Edition Recycled Plastic Kitchen Composter:

This unit is used in a workplace of 8 people. The waste is from prepared lunch meals so, we get a lot of un-seasoned lettuce, apple cores, veggies and the occasional orange peel. It is a lot of wet stuff!
The unit was originally kept inside, but oder and leaking became a serious problem. The unit must be maintained a few times a week with the addition of baking soda and sawdust. The top and sides of the bin must also be scraped down. I monitor the drop drawer also,as the tea container tends to fill up before the compost is ready to be dropped. The unit makes great compost tea and our office plants have never been healthier!

The composting process takes only a few weeks. And the compost is ready to use when it drops. Since we have had this unit we have filled a small trashcan with the resulting compost. Our gardener could not be happier with the results. The only waste items we usually have to pick out of the dropped compost is banana peels (they are stringy and they harden up once the majority of the peel breaks down, also orange peels must be torn into very small pieces. Because ofnthe tumbling mechanism, Anything larger than a kiwi fruit needs to be cut up.

This was an experiment within our business and one we have expanded upon. We now have three of these units.

Comments about Nature Mill NatureMill PRO XE Edition Recycled Plastic Kitchen Composter:

I've been using this compost bin for about six weeks now and it really works. I have not added very many orange rinds or other scraps that might be difficult to break down but I've produced one load that is dry and fine.
It sounds a bit louder than a fish tank and when it mixes (every four hours or so) it is quite noisy. There is a very slight odor (I don't notice it unless I open it) but it's not unpleasant.
This is so convenient in Western Masssachusetts where outdoor compost freezes half the year and when it thaws in spring, it's a stinky mess for awhile. One thing: to start it you need a cup of dirt--not to be found in the hills in January even if you dig through the three feet of snow and use a pickaxe. I used some I had in a pot from an expired houseplant.
I'm very glad I got the model with the foot pedal. Much easier than having to lift the top up with your hands full of garbage.
All in all, excellent! My only real issues are the price which is way too high for what it is (fish tank pump and heater, styrofoam body). Capacity could be bigger--barely big enough for two people and that's with freezing most of our veggie scraps for stock and broth
