The Worm Factory® 3-Tray Recycled Plastic Worm Composter - Black is like a capsule hotel in Tokyo … except the guests are 6,000 worms and it goes in your backyard.
Made from 100% recycled plastic, this composter allows worms to happily nosh 24/7 on your kitchen waste and whatnot, providing you rich organic material. Odorless, well-organized, green … and best of all, the worms will eat your junk mail. Or bills.
What is The Worm Factory® and how does it work?
Unique and ingenious, the Worm Factory® is composter comprised of stacking trays in which worms eat your scraps and leave behind rich organic material. Fill each tray with scraps like vegetables, fruits, egg shells, coffee grounds, paper, and junk mail, and in turn you'll get nutrient-rich compost for your garden. Worm castings are known to be the very best compost available. Your plants will thrive with this all-natural compost. Worms start in the bottom tray and work upward as they break down the waste. The worms leave behind the stuff, and you don't even have to sort through the wiggly friends at all, as they're already on the next tray up. Plus nutrient-rich moisture is captured in the collection tray and can be used as liquid fertilizer known as "worm tea."

I am loving this whole system. It sounded weird at first but it's so interesting! [@] The booklet is wonderful and provides all of the necessary information, plus the high points are written on the lid of the worm bin, so you can't forget and feed them the wrong food or something. It says you get to know your worms and I already realize that's true. I can tell in only a week if they have enough food to work on, if they need more bedding and if the bin is too moist. What a great thing to learn from and to learn about!

As a novice composter I was anxious to begin. Assembly of the drain was easy, but the instructions were not clear in describing the different trays. Preparation of the initial tray was specific but what to do with the subsequent trays was not. All the trays were called "working tray" which I found confusing. Lucky for me it didn't matter to the worms and all seems to be going well.

Comments about The Worm Factory® 3-Tray Recycled Plastic Worm Composter - Black:
I am happy with my worm composter so far, however, I ordered my worms and composter together and the worms arrived 3 days before the composter. When I received the composter, the directions said I should have everything set up and prepared for the worms...if that is so, you need to do a better job of getting the worms here at least at the same time. I was afraid I was going to lose them...thankfully, they are now alive and well in their composter.

Lid lacks protection against rain entering worm farm and soaking contents. I would be nice if lid went to outside of top drawer to keep rain water out.

Comments about The Worm Factory® 3-Tray Recycled Plastic Worm Composter - Black:
I live in an apartment. I have a very small balcony. Coming from a house with a large organic garden (and lots of composting and warms!) it has been a huge adjustment for me as I want to compost my food scraps to make soil for my containers. I've actually been composting in bags, but that resulted in anaerobic material that was pretty smelly. However, my 5 worms that I had taken from a friends yard had done fairly well, even in the bags, and had reproduced, but it was not what I wanted.
This composter fit perfectly in a corner of my balcony. It was much more attractive than big bags and easy to use. I put my bag contents in to start and am waiting for my worms to arrive to add to the few I have already. I will wait a few months and add another comment. But so far, so good! It was just what I was looking for.

Q1: How many worms do I need to purchase with the cascade compost bin?
A: You should purchase about 1,000 worms to start your composter. After this initial purchase, the worm count will double every three months!
Q2: Can you mix worms and night crawlers?
A: Though not necessary, mixing red wigglers with night crawlers is okay. To compliment this item we recommend the Uncle Jim's Super Reds European Night Crawlers
Q3: How do I decide between the 3, 4 or 5 tray worm factory? Do you need to fill all of the trays at once? Thanks.
A: You will want to decide how many trays to purchase based on how much waste your household will be generating. Essentially, the more members of your household you have, and the more compostable waste you generate, the more trays you should have. You do not need to fill all of your trays all at once; the worms will breed and fill your trays, self adjusting to fit the space you have.
Q4: What is the difference between a 3-, 4-, or 5-tray composter? How do I know what to choose?
A: Choosing the number of trays would depend on how many worms the containers are required to hold. We carry small quantities of 1000 Uncle Jim's Red Worms. Once the worms start to crowd the area additional trays would need to be ordered.
Q5: What is the difference between the 5 tray, 4 tray and 3 tray system. I'm a single guy and don't produce a lots of waste. Should I start with 3? and can I add to it later if need be? Do I still need 1000 worms?
A: The difference between the 5 tray, 4 tray and 3 tray is the amount of waste the worms compost. Since you don't produce a lot of waste you should start with a 3 tray and you can indeed add more trays if needed later. You should purchase about 1,000 worms to start your composter. After this initial purchase, the worm count will double every three months.
