Description

The Worm Factory® 5-Tray Recycled Plastic Worm Composter - Black is like a capsule hotel in Tokyo … except the guests are 6,000 worms and it goes in your backyard.
Made from 100% recycled plastic, this composter allows worms to happily nosh 24/7 on your kitchen waste and whatnot, providing you rich organic material. Odorless, well-organized, green … and best of all, the worms will eat your junk mail. Or bills.

What is The Worm Factory® and how does it work?
Unique and ingenious, the Worm Factory® is composter comprised of stacking trays in which worms eat your scraps and leave behind rich organic material. Fill each tray with scraps like vegetables, fruits, egg shells, coffee grounds, paper, and junk mail, and in turn you'll get nutrient-rich compost for your garden. Worm castings are known to be the very best compost available. Your plants will thrive with this all-natural compost. Worms start in the bottom tray and work upward as they break down the waste. The worms leave behind the stuff, and you don't even have to sort through the wiggly friends at all, as they're already on the next tray up. Plus nutrient-rich moisture is captured in the collection tray and can be used as liquid fertilizer known as "worm tea."

What are the benefits of using The Worm Factory®?

  • It's Compact:
It stacks instead of spreading out, so if you're short on space, no worries. The Worm Factory takes up a minimal amount of space.
  • Odorless:
With a smart ventilation lid and specific suggestions in the instruction manual, The Worm Factory remains odorless as it works tirelessly to create rich organic material. So breathe easy!
  • Easy to Manage:
The trays are lightweight and easy to stack and move, and the accompanying instruction manual is chock full of suggestions to make composting easy and seamless.
  • Saves Time:
Forget running out to your composter to tumble and turn it! Let the worms do the work for you. They'll happily munch their way through your scraps and even junk mail, and you reap the benefits of what they leave behind. They don't stop, either, so the rate of compost is faster. Those babies can nosh up to 8 pounds of food per week, providing you a whole tray of nutrient-rich castings every month. That's efficiency.

I've had the Eisenia foetida composting worms for 4 years now and have tried several different styles of composters. During the Iowa winter I keep them in a spare bedroom. Larger compost bins I've tried easily become anerobic or become too heavy for me to move. Last fall I purchased a 5-tray compost bin and have used it in the kitchen all winter. My husband hasn't minded it at all since it doesn't smell and he likes having it closeby to quickly lift the lid and throw in coffe grounds, veggie scraps, banana peels etc.
I enjoy using the wonderful worm castings to mix with potting soil as well as making "tea" to water the plants under my grow lights etc. I have access to free wooden and plastic boxes but have come to realize this 5-tray composter is worth the money. I plan on buying two or three a year until I have enough to throw away my other containers.

I use this worm composter in the basement. The weight of the bins is too heavy as bins appear too compacted and need frequent airation. I like the design of the composter but think the bins should be designed so they are anchored onto the edge of the bins with enough air for the worms without compressing onto the lower bin. I think I'd prefer an open bin rather than this tower design.

Comments about The Worm Factory® 5-Tray Recycled Plastic Worm Composter - Black:

Since I am a FIRST TIME USER the directions were too vague. I followed the setup directions and my worms wouldn't move. So I dumped everything out and threw it all back in. THE WORMS WERE MUCH HAPPIER.

      Service and delivery comments:

Service was prompt. I had a problem with the first delivery and it was taken care of in a very professional manner. I would recommend this company to everyone.

Comments about The Worm Factory® 5-Tray Recycled Plastic Worm Composter - Black:

I like that the worms separate themselves from the compost. I love to fish and they make great bait. I love the tip in the instruction book, on how to fatten up the worms. Compost at bottom makes it easy to use in the garden. Homemade bin is a hassle.

              Customer Q & A
              1 - 5 of 7
                  1   2

Q1: How many worms do I need to purchase with the cascade compost bin?

A: You should purchase about 1,000 worms to start your composter. After this initial purchase, the worm count will double every three months!

Q2: Does the black 5 tier worm composting bin have a cover for the top of bin? If it does is it glass or plastic?

A: Yes it does come with a Ventilation Tips Lid, and it is plastic.

Q3: In harsher climates, what happens during the winter to the worms?

A: The worms need to be kept warm.  It would be necessary to move to a indoor location, such as the basement.

Q4: If I put junk mail into the compost bin, does it need to be shredded first?

A: Yes, any kind of paper needs to be shredded first to speed up the progress.

Q5: Does this process produce any smell?

A: This process it's totally odorless.
