What is The Worm Factory® 5-Tray Worm Composter - Terra Cotta and how does it work?
The Worm Factory® is a multi-tray worm composter that helps manage the composting process. Fill each stacking tray with kitchen scraps such as newspaper, junk mail, vegetables, fruits, egg shells, coffee grounds, paper, and cardboard into nutrient-rich compost for your garden. Most "Master Gardeners" consider worm castings to be the very best compost available. Your plants will thrive with this all-natural compost. Sorting out the undigested scraps can be a messy, inconvenient chore with ordinary worm composters.Worms start in the bottom tray and migrate upward as they break down the waste. This allows worms to separate themselves from the finished compost making it easy to add nutrient-rich fertilizer to plants and gardens without sorting worms. Additionally, nutrient-rich moisture is captured in the collection tray and can be drained as liquid fertilizer known as "worm tea".

So, I've only had my composter for about a month but I really dig it. I love the worms! They're like my new little pets. I opted for only a half pound of worms--I could probably have added another tray by now if I'd gotten a whole pound. The composter is definitely odor free if you manage it properly. Maybe I would have liked the lid and the longer legs on the 360 better, but the original is suiting me just fine. Can't wait till I can give my garden some worm tea!

I was not pleased with the initial results. After the first few days most of our worms (1lb. or more)had tired to get out because of the intense heat and had collected in the bottom drain and had drowned! Many had collected in the corners and were dying. The the stench was strong and we had to completely replace the and restock the bin. At present we are only using the top try and the 3rd tray only and with fewer worms. We keep this bin in the shade on a patio, but perhaps this bin is not made for hotter (S.Tx.) climates to perform as it is described.

Q1: How many worms do I need to purchase with the cascade compost bin?
A: You should purchase about 1,000 worms to start your composter. After this initial purchase, the worm count will double every three months!
Q2: How long will it take 1,000 worms to make a 12.5 pound tray of compost?
A: According to our specifications it takes approximately 6,000 worms one week to make 5-8 pounds of compost. At this exact rate it would take 1,000 worms a little over 12 weeks to produce 12.5 pounds of compost.
Q3: Can I put dog droppings in any other composter other than the Pet Poo bin?
A: You should not put dog droppings in your composter, they will attract pests to the pile and can spread disease.
Q4: I ordered worms from you and they have arrived before my composter. What should I do with the worms until I get the compost bin?
A: The worms can last up to ten days in the packaging they arrived in. (Not the best, but they will last) Give them some water when they arrive.
If you're afraid they won't make it, you can make a temporary home for them instead. Put the worms into a plastic container about the size of a shoe box or bucket. Put some shredded black and white newsprint in the bottom that has been moistened (about the amount of a rung out sponge). This will act as food and bedding until your compost bin arrives and they can be placed into their new permanent home.
